Surrey Lofts is an affordable, non-touristy, no-frills, 100-year-old building that has found a new lease of life as boutique accommodation, co-working, and art space all rolled into one. Surrey Lofts – The Idea
The Surrey Lofts was designed as a single-family house by the firm of Rice and Myers in 1915. The house was originally built as a duplex with a separate garage. It was later converted into a single-family house. The design of the ground floor is based on that of the bungalows and cottages in the local area. The first floor is divided into four large rooms with a large balcony off of the reception room on the second floor. The building is located in South Surrey, which is a residential part of Surrey. It is very close to the city of Surrey, the University of Western Ontario, the Fraser Valley, and the Fraser Olympic Park.
Surrey Lofts – What’s New
The original design of the Surrey Lofts was substantially altered in the early 1960s. A three-story addition was constructed on the eastern side of the original house. The two lower levels were converted into retail space, while the upper floors served as two residential towers. The structure of the eastern addition is similar to that of the bungalows and cottages in the local area.
Surrey Lofts – What’s Next
In the early 2000s, a developer proposed to build a 12-story tower between the Surrey Lofts and the Canada Line Station. The proposed tower would have been the tallest building in Surrey and the second tallest in British Columbia. The proposal was quickly withdrawn, but the area is still waiting for a residential high-rise.
Surrey Lofts – Future
Surrey Lofts is currently the only building in South Surrey with a fully licensed “antique distribution” food hall. The food hall is open to the public four days a week. Visitors can purchase cheese, chocolates, gourmet coffee, snacks, and baked goods from small local manufacturers. The food hall is located on the third floor of the building.
